The three system types
Single zone mini split
One outdoor condenser drives one indoor unit, and the pair conditions one space. No ductwork. The indoor unit mounts on a wall, refrigerant lines run through a small penetration to the condenser outside, and that's the whole system.
Where it wins: a primary bedroom that never cools right, a garage conversion, a home office, an addition the existing HVAC never reached. A 12,000 BTU unit typically handles 450 to 650 sq ft. Because each system is self contained, you can solve one room now and another room next year.

Multi zone mini split
One outdoor condenser drives two to five indoor heads, each with its own thermostat. Still no ductwork. The bedroom can sit at 68 while the living room holds 73, and an empty room can be off entirely.
Where it wins: homes without existing ducts, additions of two or more rooms, and anyone who wants real room-by-room control with a single condenser outside instead of three. Indoor heads come as wall mounts or ceiling cassettes, and you can mix them on one condenser.

Central ducted heat pump
An air handler connected to ductwork, fed by an outdoor condenser. One system conditions the whole house through the vents you already have. If your home has ducts in decent shape, this is the cleanest swap for an aging furnace and AC pair: the new equipment drops into the role the old equipment held.
Where it wins: whole home replacement, homes with functional ductwork, and buyers who want one thermostat and a familiar setup rather than indoor units on the walls.

How to choose in three questions
- Does the home have usable ducts? If yes and you want whole home coverage, start with EZ Central. If no, you're in mini split territory regardless.
- How many rooms actually have a comfort problem? One room, single zone. Two to five rooms, multi zone. Counting more than five, look at central or a pair of multi zone systems.
- How much does per-room control matter? If different people in the house want different temperatures, multi zone settles that argument permanently.
Two notes before you buy
Sizing comes from a load calculation, not a guess. Square footage gets you a rough bracket, and every NG Trade product page shows one. The final call should come from a Manual J load calculation that accounts for insulation, windows, ceiling height, and climate.
